This hadith is the first hadith in the Book of Faith in Sahih Muslim. It was narrated by Ibn ‘Umar (the son of ‘Umar), who himself narrated it from his father (‘Umar). There is a story related to the narration of this hadith, reported by Muslim in the introduction to this hadith with its chain of transmission, from Yahyā ibn Ya‘mar, who said:

“The first person to speak about predestination (Qadar) in the city of Basrah was Ma‘bad Al-Juhanī; so Khālid ibn ‘Abd ar-Rahmān Al-Himyari and I set out—either for Hajj or ‘Umrah.”

Description

We said: “If we were to meet one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we could question him regarding what these people say about predestination (Qadar).” Allah facilitated for us the meeting with ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattāb, who was entering the mosque. We both positioned ourselves beside him, one on his right and the other on his left, and I suspected that my companion would leave me the responsibility of speaking. I said:
“O Abū ‘Abdir-Rahmān! There are people who have appeared among us who recite the Qur’an and seek knowledge (and he mentioned other characteristics), and they claim that there is no predestination and that Allah only knows things after they occur.”

He (‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar) replied:
“If you meet them, inform them that I am innocent of them and they are innocent of me! And by the One by Whom ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar swears, if any of them were to give in charity the equivalent of Mount Uhud in gold, Allah would not accept it from him until he believes in predestination.”
