A poignant warning about the reality of punishment
In Hell, Ibn Kathir gives us a striking and detailed description of Hell from the verses of the Quran and authentic hadiths. This book is a powerful reminder of the consequence of sins and the denial of truth, thus offering essential reflection on the hereafter and divine justice.
The Prophet ﷺ reported this moving exchange between him and the angel Gabriel:
"Why have I never seen the angel Michael laugh?"
Gabriel replied:
"Since Hell was created, he has never laughed again." (Reported by Anas, authenticated by At-Tabarani.)

A Terrifying Description of the Ultimate Punishment
Allah revealed in the Quran:
"Go to the punishment you used to deny! Seek shelter under the smoke of Hell rising in three columns, unable to provide shade or protection from the flames. The Fire will cast sparks as huge as towers, resembling black camels. Woe, that Day, to those who denied the truth!" (Surah Al-Mursalat, v. 29-34)
Ibn Kathir also reports this explanation from Ibn Mas‘ud regarding the Word of Allah:
"The Fire will cast sparks as huge as towers."
Ibn Mas‘ud said:
"Not the size of trees or mountains, but of cities and fortresses."
