"This is the belief of Imam Abu Ja`far Ahmad at-Tahawi (d. 321 H.), in which he mentions the beliefs of the pious predecessors, and those who followed them among the members of the People of the Sunnah and the Community, especially the Imams of the Hanafi jurisprudential school, of which Imam at-Tahawi was a follower. He stated his objective in the introduction, saying:
"This is a declaration of the belief of the People of the Sunnah and the Community according to the opinion of the jurists of this religion: Abu Hanifah An-Nu`man ibn Thabit al-Kufi, Abu Yusuf Ya`qub ibn Ibrahim al-Ansari, and Abu `Abdillah Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan ash-Shaybani and the foundations of the religion in which they believed and sought the pleasure of the Lord of the worlds."
Then he proceeded to mention the foundations of these beliefs, mentioning 105 phrases covering what the People of the Sunnah and the Community believe in general. He began by clarifying the Oneness of Allah the Most High, mentioning some of the Attributes of His Lordship, exalted is He, such as Life, the fact that He subsists by Himself and sustains others, creation, sustenance, affirming the Attributes of perfection, without seeking the how, nor anthropomorphism. Then he mentioned the obligatory nature of faith in the prophethood of Muhammad, may the praises of Allah and His blessings be upon him, and that he was sent to all of humanity. Then, he explained that the noble Quran is the Word of Allah uncreated, the affirmation of the believers' vision of Allah in the Hereafter, then some matters of the unseen that the People of the Sunnah believe in, such as the Basin, Intercession, the Throne, and the Footstool. After that, he mentioned one of the pillars of faith, namely faith in decree and destiny, and what the People of the Sunnah and the Community believe in this regard.
Then he moved on to the definition of faith and the clarification of its pillars and the fact that it grows and diminishes, clarifying the path of the People of the Sunnah between that of the Khawarij and the Murji'ah, just as he showed what the People of the Sunnah believe about the noble Companions, may Allah be pleased with them. Then he moved on to some signs of the Hour and what will happen on the Day of Resurrection. Finally, he concluded his treatise by clarifying the balanced nature of this religion, and that it is in the middle between exaggeration and neglect.
