A call to spiritual and moral elevation

In The Book of Virtue, Ibn Hazm, a great Andalusian scholar and thinker, offers us a deep reflection on the importance of virtue and good deeds in the life of the believer. Through teachings imbued with wisdom, he distinguishes the different aspirations of human beings and their spiritual consequences.

The author reminds us that true happiness lies in the pursuit of virtue and righteousness, while misery accompanies those who find pleasure in sins and vice.

"Blessed is he whose soul finds pleasure in virtue and good deeds, fleeing vice and sins. Unhappy is he who finds pleasure in vice and sins, fleeing virtue and good deeds." (Ibn Hazm)

Description

The different categories of men according to their aspirations

Ibn Hazm distinguishes men based on their ambitions and goals:

  • He who strives for the hereafter is on the side of the angels.
  • He who strives for evil is on the side of the demons.
  • He who runs after glory and victory is on the side of the beasts.
  • He who pursues sensory pleasures is on the side of the animals.
  • He who seeks money only to accumulate it, without spending it for good, is even more vile than animals.

The author warns against earthly desires that distance man from his spiritual essence and confine him in a low and insignificant existence.

Wisdom and virtue, distinctions of noble souls

The man is not defined by his desires or possessions, but by his pursuit of wisdom and righteousness. Only reason, when guided by faith, elevates him above beasts and animals.

“The wise man derives no satisfaction from a characteristic that places him lower than beasts, animals, and inanimate objects. He rejoices only in his progress in the virtue by which Allah distinguishes him from these same beasts, animals, and objects. It is the virtue of reason that he shares with the angels.” (Ibn Hazm)
