The pillars of the prayer, its obligations, and its recommended actions are all components of the prayer, and they all fall under the Islamic legal definition of prayer, which is: “specific words and actions that begin with the takbīr and end with the taslīm.”
There is a difference between the pillars, the obligations, and what is recommended (al-mustahabbāt).
It is obligatory to fulfill the pillars, and this obligation is not lifted whether one leaves any of them intentionally or out of forgetfulness. As for the obligations, abandoning them intentionally invalidates the prayer.

Description

The pillars of the prayer, its obligations, and its recommended actions are all components of this prayer, and they all fall under the definition of prayer in Islamic legislation, which is: “specific words and actions that begin with the takbīr and end with the taslīm.”
There is a difference between the pillars, the obligations, and what is recommended (al-mustahabbāt).
It is obligatory to fulfill the pillars, and this obligation is not removed whether one leaves any of them intentionally or out of forgetfulness. As for the obligations, abandoning them intentionally invalidates the prayer.
Leaving an obligation out of forgetfulness can be corrected by the prostration of forgetfulness (sujūd as-sahw).
As for what is recommended in the prayer, such as the opening supplication (duʿā’ al-istiftāḥ) and seeking refuge (al-istiʿādhah), whoever performs them is rewarded, and whoever leaves them is not punished, except if this abandonment is out of rejection of the Sunnah, due to the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not one of mine.”
Reported by Al-Bukhārī no. 5063 and Muslim no. 1401.
For the word Sunnah in this hadith refers to the most general meaning of Sunnah: the way of the Messenger ﷺ and what he was upon, which includes everything brought by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.
