Description
Riyâd as-sâlihîn needs no introduction as its reputation remains undisputed. The composition of the work is expertly done; the arrangement of its chapters is remarkable, the selection of hadiths, scholarly; and finally, the classification of themes takes us from matters of the heart to those of the body. Simply reading the table of contents feels like Imam Nawawî is giving us a roadmap and a manual to follow in this world in order to peacefully achieve success in the hereafter.
The translator has made a significant effort by constantly referring back to the etymology of terms, explanations, and commentaries of our scholars, especially those from the collections of Bukhârî and Muslim. The translator drew from the numerous commentaries on Riyâd as-sâlihîn available in Arabic. As for the authentication of hadiths (tahqîq), it is based on the work of one of the great scholars of our time in this field, Shaykh al-Albânî.
Riyâd as-sâlihîn is more than just a book. As its title suggests, it is like gardens where one comes, hour by hour, to share unique moments with the Prophet. The first hadith begins with: "Actions are judged by intentions [...]." The final hadith of the work concludes: "[...] God will then remove the veil, and nothing that has been granted to them will be more precious than the sight of their Lord." Imam Nawawî seems to be telling us through this particular arrangement that everything starts in the heart and ends with God, the Most High. In between, there is a path to follow. Riyâd as-sâlihîn will certainly help us achieve that.
